In these volumes the clerk transcribed personal and other data from petitions for naturalization, or "second papers," submitted by aliens. Information includes the petitioner's name and residence, date and place of birth, the name of the foreign potenate to whom allegiance was renounced (nationality), length of residence in the United States, names and residences of two citizen witnesses, and often the date and place where the declaration of intention was filed. Beginning in 1904 the petitioner's age, occupation, and date and place of arrival were added, along with affidavits of witnesses. Completing the petition is the applicant's oath of allegiance and the court order admitting him as a citizen.
